$150,000 In Funding Towards The Bahamas’ Fight Against Cancer
In commemoration of the launch of the Bahamas Breast Cancer Program,
Sunshine Insurance (Agents & Brokers) Limited hosted government
officials and members of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure ® Organization
to a luncheon on Tuesday, September 11th, 2012 at the Balmoral Club. In
2010, Sunshine Insurance through the non-profit entity, Marathon
Bahamas, formed a strategic partnership with Susan G. Komen for the Cure
®. This relationship has resulted in the addition of The Bahamas Race
for the Cure ® to the Sunshine Insurance Race Weekend. Sunshine
Insurance, as lead sponsor of Marathon Bahamas, was pleased to host this
recent event that brought together members of the government, medical,
business and civic community – all of whom play significant roles in the
efforts that are required to address the cancer epidemic in The
Bahamas.
Grant Funding of $100,000 for The Bahamas Breast Cancer Program
The Susan G. Komen for the Cure® organization is now expanding its
role in The Bahamas. At the launch of the Bahamas Breast Cancer Program
on Wednesday, September 11th, 2012; Ambassador Nancy Brinker, founder
and CEO of Susan G. Komen for the Cure ® announced grant funding of
$100,000 towards the Bahamas’ Breast Cancer Program. The funding is
comprised of $50,000 from Mrs. Tina Lewis, a Susan G. Komen for the Cure
® Global Ambassador and Board Member for the Susan G. Komen Advocacy
Alliance. Mrs. Lewis is a US citizen with a strong affinity for the
Bahamian woman’s fight against breast cancer. The Susan G. Komen for
the Cure ® organization provided a matching grant of $50,000. Combined
these funds will be used to assist with provider and public breast
cancer education initiatives. At the launch, the Honorable Dr. Perry G.
Gomez, Minister of Health, brought remarks highlighting the breast
health issues that are unique to The Bahamas and how the use of the
grant funds will assist the Breast Cancer Program to bring about
tangible change.
Donations of $50,000 from the Sunshine Insurance Race Weekend 2012
In addition, to the grant funds announced at the launch of the
Bahamas Breast Cancer Program, the cancer community previously benefited
from the disbursement of funds raised from the Sunshine Insurance Race
Weekend 2012. Each of the respective named beneficiaries from the
Bahamas Race for the Cure ® and Marathon Bahamas received $10,000. The
named beneficiaries included: The Princess Margaret Hospital
Foundation, The Cancer Society of The Bahamas, Sister Sister Breast
Cancer Support Group, The Bahamas Breast Cancer Initiative and The
Cancer Association of Grand Bahama. The donations were made possible
from the generous donations of corporate sponsors and the registration
fees of Sunshine Insurance Race Weekend participants.
